Polymer Clay Tip of the Week
Bark Cane
January 31, 2004
This is a fun way to make a cane go a little further. You may already know how great the jelly roll cane is, here is a funky variation that reminds me of bark. Try it in natural color combinations for a wood affect or try it out in different colors to show off it's unique flair.

Supplies:

Polymer Clay - 2 or 3 colors

Pasta Machine

Razor blade or tissue blade

Directions:

1. Make a standard jellyroll out of 2-3 colors of clay. Make sure your colors have enough contrast, lights and darks.

2. Cut your jellyroll into half inch sections.

3. Place half inch jellyroll on it's side.

4. Cut in half.

5. Side view of the cane cut in half, it will be a bunch of stripes.

6. Make a bead from your extra clay, try a tube to start out with. Slice thin layers of the cane and apply to your bead. The more slices you make, the design will change into circles. Gently roll the bead in your hand to smooth out the seems.

7. Cross section of the cane.

Here is a collection of beads made using this technique.
